Habitat For Humanity Gives Local Youth The Opportunity To Build A House With Their Spare Change
"Nickels for Nails" Spring Fund Drive Will Raise Money for Los Angeles' Second "House That Youth Built"
LOS ANGELES, CA, April 29, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) will be holding its Nickels for Nails Spring Fund Drive May 4th-15th. Nickels for Nails is a youth led initiative where participants receive fundraising suggestions, a coin collection container for their group and downloadable curriculum covering topics such as "What's in a home?" and "Economics, Government and Housing." Fundraising efforts in the past have included collecting change by recycling cans and bottles, as well as, hosting small fairs and carnivals. All of the funds raised during the week will go towards the $150,000 needed to build HFH GLA's second youth-sponsored home.
"Nickels for Nails is a tangible way for students to become aware of current issues related to affordable housing and the power they have to make a difference," says Erin Rank, president/CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles. "If young people come together and donate their spare change, they can make a lasting change for one hard-working family in Los Angeles."
HFH GLA will highlight the group that raises the most funds on the website and in an upcoming newsletter in addition to awarding them with a prize. All youth that participate in the Fund Drive will be invited to the groundbreaking celebration for the second "House that Youth Built," where they will also have the opportunity to meet the homeowner family. Students that participate, age 16 and older, will also be encouraged to help build the home.
